What exactly is Alpha? Some sort of grain?
No, that's alfalfa. ALPHA is a free course that meets on Thursday nights for 10 weeks. During each session, we have a darn tasty dinner, listen to a non-churchy talk, then break into smaller groups for dessert and discussion in a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere.
Who runs ALPHA? Organized religion scares me.
The ALPHA small groups are led by volunteers so the vibe is kickbacked and relaxed. And, there's not a robe or pew in sight.
Who goes to ALPHA? Super-Chrisitans?
Quite the contrary: people curious about Christianity, atheists, singles, married folks, new Christians, computer programmers, seekers, newcomers to Hollywood Pres, agnostics, college students, Christians who want a refresher course, chefs, and even guys with goatees.
What's the "real" reason people attend ALPHA? Are they hypnotized?
People attend out of their own free will for a ton of reasons: to investigate whether God exists, to seek meaning in their lives, to meet other new Christians, to understand the power of prayer, to consume their weight in brownies - to name just a few.
How do I know if ALPHA is right for me? It's a big commitment and I normally play Scrabble on Thursday nights.
Although your passion for Scrabble is understandable, why don't you skip it just one Thursday and attend the first meeting? If ALPHA's not for you, no sweat. But if you dig it, play Scrabble on Saturday nights instead.
