Stories

You know by now I love stories.  Stories hold our attention, and can communicate in ways that merely stating facts never does.  The novelist John Gardner once said “There really are only two plots in American fiction.  Either a stranger comes to town…or someone goes on a journey.” It may be a bit of literary exaggeration, but it is amazing how many stories boil down to this simple structure.  It is even true of the gospel story that takes shape in us.  One way or another, a Stranger comes into our lives. And we spend the rest of our days on a journey with Him.

I’ve had a lot of fun over the years writing an occasional Christmas story.  First in Seattle, and then last year here in Hollywood, I have sometimes read them at the “Children & Family” Christmas Eve services.   My hope is always that for at least a few minutes, a story might hold the attention of the children while also giving adults a little something to reflect upon.

I will indeed read a short story this Saturday evening (5pm).  But a couple years ago I wrote one that just couldn’t be shortened enough for the Christmas Eve service.  So I’m attaching it for you- “Silent Night” (2009).  I hope you might find a quiet moment to sit down with a cup of coffee or tea and just enjoy it.  And I pray that it might somehow point you toward THE story of Christmas.

Many Christmas blessings to you all

from Anne and me…

Sermon Series: Real Life Community
Lesslie Newbigin once said, “It is surely a fact of inexhaustible significancethat what our Lord left behind Him was not a book, nor a creed, nor a system of thought, nor a rule of life…but a visible community.”
But what might that look like in real life?
