POSITION DESCRIPTION
Director of Worship
REPORTS TO:
Senior Pastor, Dr. Gary Stratman
EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
Full-Time
ACCOUNTABILITY AND OVERVIEW:
The Director of Worship has overall responsibility for the organization and work of the Worship and Music Department and provides creative leadership in the planning and production of four distinctly different worship services on Sunday mornings, each of which has its own integrity in expressing and supporting the central ideas of the message for that morning.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and coordinate four distinct worship services, including the production management of all services on Sunday mornings.
- Create service orders for each service.
- Provide written worship materials (Confessions, Litanies etc.) drawn from the theme of the worship service
- Create detailed production sheets for each service which are distributed to all service participants, pastors and tech personnel.
- Work with Senior Pastor, Associate Pastors, Praise/CUE Band Leaders and Choir Directors in choosing music (congregational, choral and special music) for each service.
- Work closely with Senior Pastor to incorporate elements such as dance, drama, special music, film and congregational responses into worship when appropriate.
- Choose and contact Elder, Deacon and member participants for each service (Scripture readers, testimonies, mission shares, announcements etc.)
- Meet with Dr. Stratman once a week to discuss worship planning and any other issues with regards to the Worship/Music dept.
- Oversee Worship planning meeting once a week where past, current and future Sundays are discussed and planned. (Senior Pastor, Associate Pastors, Technical Director and Choir/Worship Leaders and key service volunteers attend this meeting.)
- Schedule guest preachers when needed.
- Maintain oversight of Worship/Music Dept. Budget
- Plan and coordinate special worship services (Christmas Eve, Service of Gathering Darkness, etc.)
- Plan and coordinate All Staff Worship once a month
- Serve as liaison with Church florist – Plan all floral decoration at church.
- Schedule baptisms and infant dedications
- Plan communion dates for worship year. Provide communion supplies. Take responsibility for ensuring that there is a functioning Communion Guild to oversea the set-up and clean-up for communion at each service. Communicate with the Session Elders responsible for over-seeing the recruitment of servers for all services to confirm adequate coverage
- Plan and coordinate all the choirs and music groups’ involvement in services
- Oversight of all choir directors, organist and praise team leaders
- Oversight of bulletin stuffing volunteer team
REQUIREMENTS:
Work Experience
Previous experience in planning and organizing worship services -- preferably a variety of forms of worship is required.
Other experience that indicates technical or production skills helpful.
Knowledge/Skills
- An understanding of the theology of worship and the variety of practices that have been a part of the church’s worship experience over the centuries to the present, including liturgical traditions and contemporary formats. A knowledge of Presbyterian history and practice helpful.
- Familiarity with classical/traditional through contemporary church music.
- Ability to exercise leadership, while still working collaboratively.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets) and enough familiarity with technology to be able to understand how technology may enhance different types of worship experiences.
- Sensitivity to cultural differences and cultural changes
