A Series of Messages on the Book of James This brief but helpful letter has been called “general” because it was addressed not to one specific congregation but to the church at large. It is my firm conviction that it is especially relevant to the spirit of the age as we live in the 21st century. R. V. G. Tasker in his commentary says, “There would . . . be special times both in the history of the church and in spiritual pilgrimage of the believer, when its message sounds forth with special relevance . . .whenever Christians are tempted to settle down to a self-centered religion, and become oblivious of the social and materials needs of others . . .” Some have objected that James’ letter rejects the crucial idea of salvation by grace through faith. (We do not earn our way into a new relationship with God.) Even Martin Luther saw this letter as “right strawy” compared to the writings of Paul. But Calvin saw that “it is not surely required of all to handle the same arguments.” Indeed, here is a living word to us for that next step of Christian discipleship. We are saved by grace (God’s gift), but how does our faith express itself in action. |
