Lord's Lighthouse

altWe are joyful this year as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Lord’s Lighthouse! Two decades ago a number of people at FPCH answered God’s call for our church to reach out to our friends in the community with extensive needs. As it continues today the Lord’s Lighthouse serves a few hundred people a week. Every Sunday it begins at 1:00pm with a Bible study and then follows at 2:00pm with a brief homily as a hot meal is served. We believe in the fellowship of breaking bread together and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Through relationships and caring our intent is to walk alongside our guests and offer prayer, friendship and information about other social services.

Purpose:

  • To provide compassionate services and empowerment for the poor, homeless and marginalized through a program that addresses the felt needs of guests and which:
  • Provide a means for individuals to escape the cycle of poverty and homelessness
  • Empower individuals to become advocates on issues essential to the poor, such as housing, employment, transportation and healthcare
  • Provide an environment that nurtures spiritual growth

Volunteers:

  • Most of the volunteers come from our church and its Sunday School classes.
  • Deacons through the “Deacon of the Day.”
  • Local churches: First Chinese Baptist Church, Christ Presbyterian, Bel Air Presbyterian.
  • High school students needing to fulfill community service requirements, such as Hollywood High, Notre Dame Academy and other local schools.

Employment Service:

  • Virtually all of The Lord’s Lighthouse guests live below the Federal Poverty threshold. In 1997, the ministry established an employment service in response to the national welfare reform initiative.
  • Our Employment Service ministry places 5-7 individuals into jobs in the LA area (weekly average). Online networking with partnering agencies continues to successfully place people into employment.
  • Butch Samm, our Employment Service Coordinator, is a job developer who identifies suitable employment opportunities on job search websites (Career Builder, CalJobs, and Monster), networks with potential employers and prepares clients for job readiness.

Partners:

What a joy to be in partnership with altUnion Rescue Mission who faithfully donates the lunch every Wednesday at the Hollywood Healthcare Partnership.

Recently, they donated a gift of a refrigerator which we need for our STAR (Shelter for Those at Risk) Ministry. We are tremendously grateful for all of the support from Rev. Andy Bates, Scott Johnson, and our friends at Union Rescue Mission.

Lesslie Newbigin once said, “It is surely a fact of inexhaustible significancethat what our Lord left behind Him was not a book, nor a creed, nor a system of thought, nor a rule of life…but a visible community.”
But what might that look like in real life?
